The 2019 Major League Baseball season gets underway this evening when the first of the pre-season Spring Training games get underway in Clearwater, Florida.
As games go the matchup between the Philadelphia ‘best pitching rotation in baseball’ Phillies and the Florida State University Seminoles is not going to start any fires, but as a symbol, the first pitch at Bright House Field in Clearwater is as the lighting of the Olympic torch for the MLB season to come.
The Boston Red Sox get their season underway on Saturday when they take on Boston College Eagles and then Northeastern University Huskies in a doubleheader.
The first start of note for the Red Sox will be Monday (1.05 EST) when their starting pitcher will be Josh Beckett. Of all the Red Sox staff Beckett has perhaps the most to prove in 2011; although Jacoby Elsbury back from a rib injury and Jonathon Papelbon in the final year of his contract and seeking a big payday as a free agent will likely run the big man close.
League13 will be running (at least weekly) updates and commentary on the MLB season, particular focus (of course) on the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs.
Watch Spring Training
You can watch the spring season games via MLB.TV (subscription). Predictably the first game covered involves the NY Yankees who host the Phillies at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla. on Saturday, February 26th (1.05 EST/18:05 GMT).
The Red Sox make their first appearance on March 4th when they visit the same venue to renew their rivalry with the Yankees (7.05 EST/00:05 GMT).
In the Cactus League, the Chicago Cubs host the LA Dodgers on March 6th (3.05 EST/20:05 EST).
